Sarah Dunbar, owner and founder of the Pretty Penny, is an avid collector and seasoned buyer of stylish fashions. She has been buying and selling both vintage and contemporary clothing for ten years.
Sarah started her career as a buyer at Mars Mercantile in Berkeley, CA during a time when vintage was at its peak. Most of the items that Mars bought during this time were vintage pieces ranging from the 1920's - 1970's. Her next buy, sell, and trade job was at the legendary Beacon's Closet, located in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Sarah quickly learned how to buy "New York Style," and this experience encouraged her to integrate an artistic approach when buying clothes from the public. Beacon's Closet also exposed her to high-end labels and vintage from Europe. Sarah eventually moved back to the West Coast, where she had a hard time shaking the buy, sell and trade business.
What she learned at Mars Mercantile and Beacon's Closet fueled Sarah's obsession with vintage and fashion. Her knowledge and passion motivated her to open her apartment to friends once a month, where she served breakfast pastries and mimosas, and sold her vintage finds. This event quickly gained popularity, and the apartment business soon became too crowded
In response to her overwhelming success, Ms. Dunbar transplanted her shop to a small location in Berkeley, CA. College and high-school students, local fashionistas, and more flocked to the Pretty Penny to peruse her unique and stylish merchandise.
After only one year, Sarah was given a wonderful opportunity to move to a larger shop within the Rockridge District of Oakland, CA, where the Pretty Penny currently resides.
